Defenseless, yet Victorious

“The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;” (Proverbs 30:26)

The cony is more widely known as a pika in Europe. They are small furry mammals like the Guinea pig in appearance but are more related to the rabbit. They burrow themselves in the hollow places of rocks. They are defenseless. Their only defense is to hide.

Solomon delivered little gems, one after the other about plants and animals and their nature. Kings and rulers came from all over the known world to hear Solomon give these nuggets of wisdom. From these wise tidbits we can gleam spiritual insight. We can make an analogy of the cony to believers in the Old and New Testaments.

Solomon used two Hebrew words that has been translated “feeble,” “lo” and “atsum.” Together those words literally mean not powerful. Conies are not powerful against the prey animals that hunt them. They have no defenses. Conies that are burrowed deep in the hollows of rocks are difficult to extract. They are safe in their rock houses.

The enemy of the believer is satan. Jesus said he is a thief who will rob, kill and destroy. (John 10:10) He is a murderer and a liar. (John 8:44) He is the accuser of the brethren before God. (Zachariah 3:1,2; Job 1:6-12) He roams the earth seeking a weakling to devour. (1 Peter 5:8) He deceives the nations. (Revelation 20:3) In ourselves we have nothing to fight against this enemy. But, like the cony we can run to our Rock. David said to Goliath, “And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, and He will give you into our hands.” (1Samuel 17:47) Jahaziel filled with the Spirit, told Judah, the people of Jerusalem and king Jehoshaphat, “...Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.” (2Chronicles 20:15) Paul tells us: “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1Corinthians 15:57-58)

The reason we are defenseless in ourselves against our enemy is because satan is waring on a spiritual level. And although we are spiritual beings, we operate in the natural realm of our world, earth. But as believers and followers of Jesus we have an advantage because the Lord has equipped us with His Word which is alive and powerful to accomplish what it says in the spiritual and the natural. The weapons of our warfare are spiritual. And although we don’t see them with our natural eyes, they’re present in the spiritual. “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;” (Ephesians 6:11-18)

In Jesus we have what we need to be victorious over the enemy. Our very core is wrapped and surrounded by the Truth of the Gospel. It protects us from the lies of the enemy. Our hearts are righteous before God never to snatched from the hand of God. Our steps have been prepared with the Gospel. We have a shield of faith to deflect all of the devil’s lies against us. Our minds and thoughts are protected by our salvation. “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.” (2Corinthians 10:3-6) And we have a weapon, the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7) Yes, run to the Rock. We are fully protected by the armor of God. Use the Word of God to resist and glory in the victory.
