Do Whatever

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might; for there is no work, nor plan, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave where you go.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10)

Many are waiting to serve God in some capacity according to their gifts and talents, but nothing has opened up and so they do nothing, waiting for that special “ministry.” But Solomen in the wisdom that God gave him, instructs us to do whatever. We can stop at that word, whatever. How could the Lord entrust us with His glorious purposes if we do nothing to show our love, our devotion, our faithfulness and diligence in “whatever.” Why would a church entrust a person who is not an initiator, a mover, an enabler and a changer in whatever, with a ministry? This is just not going to happen.

What can one see that needs to be done? What are the gaps that you can fill? Do that! Take the initiative, volunteer and be a task force for the Lord, helping the brethren, the ministers of the Gospel, and leaders of the church. Solomon adds to do it with all your might which means all of your ability, all of your strength and all of your resources. Don’t be stingy, sloppy or careless with what you’re doing because you are doing it for the Lord, for His eyes and for the love you have for the Lord. “As to diligence, not slothful, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;” (Romans 12:11).

What are you seeking in doing this? Is it self-recognition? Is it praise? Is it for your own pride? Or is it to do the best that you can to do as your part for the kingdom of God? “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33) That last phrase in this Scripture, says lots. In the Truth of Sowing and Reaping, we believe that we get a return on our investment. It doesn’t only have to do with money, but time, effort or whatever you give as “unto the Lord.” There will be a return of that. Like a farmer who sows corn expects corn, whatever we sow, we will get that in return multiplied. My husband always told those who needed a job to sow work at the church. And every time, if they followed his advice, they would get a job. This isn’t some magic formula, but a promise from the Lord to multiply whatever we surrender to Him. “Give, and it shall be given to you, good measure pressed down and shaken together and running over, they shall give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you measure, it shall be measured to you again.” (Luke 6:38)

Then Solomon refers to our departure from this world with the phrase, “...for there is no work, nor plan, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave where you go.” In this life we can work and plan to make our lives here easier or better. But whatever we work for and plan for is only for this world. The only thing that will be eternal is our decision to follow or not follow Jesus. Any knowledge or wisdom we gain is useful for this world only. If we decided to follow Jesus, we have an eternity with Jesus and all the knowledge and wisdom that we need for that life will be given to us. “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall fully know even as I also am fully known.” (1Corinthians 13:12)

In short, we are to be actively useful in this life, doing our part contributing to the kingdom of God. We are to do the best that we can, knowing that it promotes our eternal home, the kingdom of heaven. Whatever we do here on earth will only matter in eternity if we accepted God’s gift of salvation through Jesus.

Let us pray:

Father God, Eternal God Who is glorious and worthy of all praise, I worship and adore You. You have given me all that I need for this world and for the next. In Your infinite wisdom, You have given me gifts and talents to use to benefit Your kingdom. In Your Word, there are things I must do that seem impossible for me, but Your Holy Spirit can empower, enable and help me with boldness and courage to do those things which can only be done with His help to further Your kingdom. Father, I ask for the help of the Holy Spirit to speak Your Word with boldness, to see and perceive what Word someone needs to be healed whether it’s physical, spiritual or in their soul (mind, will, emotions) and to discern the cry of their hearts, their need and Your Will for them so I can speak life for them, so they can understand Your love and so that they can be set free of any hinderances from going to You, from repenting, from believing and from receiving of Your grace. Be exalted most precious Holy Lord. In the Name of Jesus I pray, amen.
