“Draw me, we will run after You. The King has brought me into his chambers; we will be glad and rejoice in You, we will remember Your love more than wine; the upright love You.” (Song of Solomon 1:4)
Before we dive into this Scripture we need to remember a few things. Solomon wrote about the love between a bride and a bridegroom. He inadvertently prophesied about the Messiah. This book is cannon which means it’s considered and accepted as inspired by the Holy Spirit. Taking that in mind we can approach these Scriptures and relate them to the relationship of the church which has been referred in many Scriptures as the Bride of Christ and Jesus Who has be referred to as the Bridegroom. It’s a love story. And there isn’t a better love story than that of the Savior’s love for His church.
“Draw me” says the bride. Jesus is the initiator of our relationship with Him. He loved us first. “We love Him because He first loved us.” (1John 4:19) He has loved us since creation. We weren’t born yet, but God knows the end from the beginning. God saw us and loved us, individually and together as His church. And when He saw us, He made plans for us, plans of blessing on earth and in union with Him in eternity. He loves and has plans for each one of us, the righteous, the unrighteous, yes even the wicked if they will turn from their evil ways and turn to Him. But we cannot go to Him, unless He draws us. It depends on our heart. We don’t even know what’s in our heart, but the Lord knows. “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but Jehovah ponders the hearts.” (Proverbs 21:2) He knows who to draw and who will run after Him. The church cries out, “Draw me and we will run after You.” That is the church’s response, what it should be, is and will always be. If the church doesn’t run after Jesus, it’s not His. The bride and her attendees are the “we.” We the church run after our Lord Who loves us and draws us to Him.
King Jesus brings the church into His chambers where His love is poured out where there is only joy, peace and a love not experienced anywhere or at any time except when we are in His manifest presence. He washes His love over us in waves of warmth and comfort unknown on this earth. To think that His love in heaven is without measure. Our human bodies could not take it. Carnal flesh can’t survive in His holiness, in such sacredness and intense love. “...we will remember Your love more than wine...” Wine is associated with celebration and joy. Wine is sweet and intoxicating. What the Bride is saying is that His love is more intoxicating that wine. It’s more potent than our physical and mental capacities, much like when too much wine is taken. Truly, the Bridegroom’s love is unearthly.
The last phrase just states clearly the Bride’s heart. She is the righteous, those redeemed by the Blood and clothed in the righteousness of Jesus. The statement is simple and clear, the church loves Jesus. The church is the unified group of believers who have been redeemed, cleansed in the Blood, forgiven and justified by their Lord and Savior. We love the Lord. We follow Him. We obey Him. And we serve Him because we love Him. “For I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and you took Me in; I was naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.” (Matthew 25:35-36) The church is united with the mission and vision of Christ for those on earth. He is the center of worship and service both individually and corporately. “And above all things have fervent love to yourselves, for love will cover a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another, without grudging; each one as he received a gift, ministering it to yourselves as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” (1Peter 4:8-10)
In summary, what appeared as the human desire and love of a married couple, God shows us in this book of Solomon, the deep love Jesus has for the church and the church’s deep love for Jesus.
Let us pray:
Father God, I thank You for Your Love which is great and everlasting. Solomon’s bride ran toward her bridegroom when he drew her. Lord, You have called me and have drawn me near to You. I run to You, to be with You my Lord. In Your Presence is fullness of joy. I delight to be in Your Presence. It’s just a splash of what heaven is like. I pray for the church to run to You Lord in love and service. I pray for Your divine Presence in our midst, in our worship. Touch us with Your love. Comfort the hurting. Heal the sick. For You Lord are Love. You are Comfort. You are Jehovah Rapha, the Healer. Let Your Will be done in us, for us and through us. In the Name of Jesus I pray, amen.
