“The breaker is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate, and are gone out by it: and their king shall pass before them, and the LORD on the head of them.” (Micah 2:13)
Micah prophesies about the coming judgement of Israel and Judah a couple of hundred years before it happened in the first two chapters of his book. At the end of chapter two, is this prophecy. He writes about “the breaker.” The breaker is none other than Jesus. To the Jews the breaker was their God and our God, known to them as Yahweh who would deliver them. To us the breaker is Jesus, our Savior and our Deliverer. The Lord in this prophecy encourages the faithful that they will be delivered by God. He will break through and lead them out.
Jesus is our breaker because He has broken through with His birth, the first born of the Spirit of God. He has broken through the barrier that separated man from God. He is the gate. Jesus said, “I am the door: by Me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.” (John 10:9) The word “door” means gate or entrance. He has broken through death to life. “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist.” (Colossians 1:15-17) Firstborn here means first parent or first creator. The enormity of the role of Jesus before becoming man is seen in this verse. Remember the phrase from other lessons, “It’s all God.” It applies here. God Creator, Savior, Deliverer and Breaker. “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.” (Hebrews 2:14-15)
Isaiah in his prophecy about God using Cyrus writes, “I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron:” (Isaiah 45:2) God has always been the breaker leading the way for His purposes. He is now our breaker. “And from Jesus Christ, Who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father; to Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” (Revelation 1:5-6) Our king goes before us. “For whom He did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.” (Romans 8:29)
Jesus is also known as the firstfruits. “For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at His coming.” (1Corinthians 15:21-23) God’s order is first Christ then us in all things. He goes before us. He leads the way because He is the way. (John 14:6) We would not be able to find the way without Him. He is the breaker. He goes before us. He is the Head. “And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church: Who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things He might have the preeminence.” (Colossians 1:17-18) And we follow Him. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me:” (John 10:27).
As in all prophecy, Micah prophesies about the Hebrews and the church at the same time. The events concerning God and His dealing with the Jews can be correlated to church. This is seen in this prophecy. God is the same yesterday, today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8) He never changes. He is only bound by His covenant. Today we have a different covenant. We have the writings of the ancients. So much information is available to us. We have hindsight and can gather knowledge and understanding of the Lord’s work. We see that from the beginning of the creation of the earth, God has it all in control. Even through man’s rebellion, God works His purpose. The Hebrews were promised a breaker. And mankind was promised a breaker. He is Jesus.
