“For the LORD’S portion is His people; Jacob is the lot of His inheritance.” (Deuteronomy 32:9)

Israel is His property. He called Abraham out from among the heathen and made promises to him, to bless and make him great and above all the nations of the world. “And the LORD hath avouched thee this day to be His peculiar people, as He hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all His commandments; And to make thee high above all nations which He hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayest be an holy people unto the LORD thy God, as He hath spoken.” (Deuteronomy 26:18,19)

He redeemed them and brought them out of slavery in Egypt. And when they reached the holy mountain of Sinai the Lord spoke to them through Moses. “Now therefore, if ye will obey My voice indeed, and keep My covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto Me above all people: for all the earth is Mine: And ye shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.” (Exodus 19:5,6)

And this He spoke also to the church. Again and again, we must be reminded that the church is a part of Israel. Paul’s metaphoric example illustrates how the church is part of God’s portion, just as Israel is God’s portion. “For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.” (Romans 11:16-18) And the Lord says to the church the same promise He gave to Israel. “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.” (1Peter 2:9-10) We see in Exodus 19:5,6 the same mission and commission of priesthood and royalty, they as God’s chosen people and the church as His children. Israel carried the oracles of God, the Almighty, the One and Only God and declares to the nations His commandments.  The church carries the covenant of eternal peace in Jesus, the Savior and Messiah, the Lord of all and Redeemer of the whole world. “And all things are of God, Who hath reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.” (2Corinthians 5:18-19)

We can see God’s wisdom, God’s eternal view and God’s love and plan from before the world was created. He is omniscient, knowing all things, the end from the beginning. “Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:” (Isaiah 46:9-10). He is omnipresent. There is nowhere anyone can hide from Him. “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with Whom we have to do.” (Hebrews 4:13). And He is omnipotent, all powerful than any power or force because He is the Creator of it. “God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.” (Psalms 62:11) And we belong to Him. We are His property. “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” (1Corinthians 3:16-17)

There is comfort in knowing that we belong to God. He has purchased us with the Blood of the Lamb which is precious. “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:” (1Peter 1:18-19). We are His precious possession which He treasures, cares for and guards.
