God's Word is Alive
“...you are snared with the words of your mouth, you are taken with the words of your mouth.” (Proverbs 6:2)
This is part of verse one in which it speaks about partnering with another in his debt. This has to do with co-signing. Verse two is in itself important and has many applications which is the reason I would like to focus on it apart from verse 1.
King Solomon in the wisdom God gave him could see how our words can trap us. The main trap is when we foolishly speak without considering what God has said and what is written in the Bible. We also can agree or commit ourselves without thinking through the extent of a commitment. Our choice of words also may have an impact on our mental attitude toward something such as a task, a responsibility or commitment.
Our words are important to the Lord because they have power. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it shall eat the fruit of it.” (Proverbs 18:21) That Scripture should scare us enough to shut our mouths and to be careful of what we utter. We can, according to this Scripture, speak death to our lives. Many of us in a flippant manner have said, “That (fill in the blank) is killing me.” I’ve heard many ladies say, “My feet are killing me.” Many parents have told their children, “You will be the death of me.” Stressful workers say, “This will be the death of me, “I will do it even if it kills me,” or “This is going to kill me.” And many of us have said, “I’m dead tired.”
My dear husband who believed in healing whether he was in good health or under the weather allowed his words to ensnare him. He had an allergic reaction to one of the medications he was given in chemotherapy which resulted in excruciating pain. It was then that he said he just wanted to die and cried out, “Just let me die.” The pain must have been agonizing because he had a high tolerance to pain. This is the enemy’s ploy. He gets to us when we’re tired, sick and vulnerable. It’s during these times that we must be extra vigilant and watch what we say. Our words will ensnare us.
Reading the Bible is so vitally important. “The fear of Jehovah is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of Jehovah are true and righteous altogether, more to be desired than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.” (Psalms 19:9-10) The judgments are God’s commandments, His decrees and His ordinances. They are true and righteous, meaning we can trust in them. They are more precious than gold. A man may have all the gold in the world but without the Lord’s decrees and ordinances, he will not be content, satisfied nor have joy. There are golden nuggets that give us life in God’s Word that can only be found when we search for them. There is wisdom for living a righteous life full of love, peace and joy. “Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gets understanding. For the profit from it is better than the gain from silver, and its produce more than fine gold; she is more precious than rubies; and all the things you can desire are not to be compared with her.” (Proverbs 3:13-15) The Lord in His infinite wisdom has placed in His Word, things to ponder and words to say and live by. If we don’t read what God has given us in His Word, we are ignorant of what can give us life. There is power of life in His Word because His Word is alive. “For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing apart of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12) God spoke and it was. (Genesis 1) How wonderful to know that we can speak life by speaking God’s Word. We can speak life and we can speak death also. The words that we speak command our organism which the Lord created to obey our words. “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but crookedness in it is a break in the spirit.” (Proverbs 15:4)
There is scientific proof that words influence our body systems. God created this connection of brain–body systems. And He has given us in His Word, commands to speak life by speaking His Word and thinking life to our body. Even the world has acknowledged that thinking positive results in positive outcomes. But without God’s Word, they cannot speak life. Neither can their words influence the world around them. But God’s Word can because they are alive.
Thinking the right way is also important because we tend to speak what we think. “...For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings out good things; and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings out evil things.” (Matthew 12:34-35) If we think on things that are unimportant or things that bring death, we will speak death to our lives. Paul was very cognizant of this. “Finally, my brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are right, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8) He continues this thought in the next verse. “Do those things which you have also learned and received and heard and seen in me. And the God of peace shall be with you.” (Philippians 4:9) God’s peace will be with us when we think on what is true. Only God’s Word is Truth, honest, right, pure, lovely, reputable and worthy of praise. And we will give account for speaking words that directly contradict what God has said. “But I say to you that every idle word, whatever men may speak, they shall give account of it in the day of judgment.” (Matthew 12:36)
In summary, God created our bodies to obey our words. We can speak life by speaking God’s Word or speak death by speaking words that are contrary to God’s Word. “Set a watch, O Jehovah, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.” (Psalms 141:3)
Let us pray:
Father God, You are so wonderful. You have provided a way for us to heal by creating our bodies to obey our thoughts and words. How marvelous this is. I ask that You watch over my mouth, that I may speak only those things which glorify You by speaking Your Word into my life and my body. I ask that You shut my mouth when the words that I will say are contrary to Your Word and Your will for my life. I ask You Lord that You keep me from the trap of speaking foolishly. Help me by the power of the Holy Spirit to choose my words wisely and to speak life to others and to myself. In the Name of Jesus I pray, amen.
