“Do not fear; for I am with you; be not dismayed; for I am your God. I will make you strong; yes, I will help you; yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of My righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10)

This is part of the prophecy that the Lord told Isaiah with which to comfort the people. It was over a hundred years before the invasion of the Babylonian invasion. Three big events are encompassed in this prophecy. The coming invasion. In Isaiah chapter 39 we learn of God’s punishment for Hezekiah’s pride. “And of your sons which shall issue from you, which you shall bring out, they shall take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.” (Isaiah 39:7) But God comforts His people, telling of the coming Redemption. “Speak lovingly to the heart of Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is done, that her iniquity is pardoned; for she has received of Jehovah's hand double for all her sins. The voice of him who cries in the wilderness, Prepare the way of Jehovah, make straight a highway in the desert for our God.” (Isaiah 40:2-3) And in the same prophecy, God tells of the Second Coming of Jesus. “Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked places shall be made level, and the rough places smooth; and the glory of Jehovah shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of Jehovah has spoken.” (Isaiah 40:4-5) It may seem a bit confusing to us that these events are mentioned one after the other as if they happen consecutively, but they don’t. We must remember that the Lord sees the past, present and future at the same time. We only see the past and the present.

God reassures them that He is the One Who will make them strong to survive it. The time will be such that even the strong will be weak. “Even the young shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall;” (Isaiah 40:30) But God promises to make them strong to survive it if they depend on Him. “...but those who wait on Jehovah shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)

He gives us the same counsel. “The right hand of Jehovah is lifted up; the right hand of Jehovah does mighty things.” (Psalms 118:16) The right hand of God is not a thing. It’s Jesus Who sits at His right hand. Jesus is the Savior, mighty to save, Conqueror of all His enemies and exalted forever. He is the One that does valiantly and Who upholds us. He speaks to us from Isaiah. “ Do not fear; for I am with you; be not dismayed; for I am your God. I will make you strong; yes, I will help you; yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of My righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10) That word “uphold” means to sustain us, to keep us, to help us to follow close, to maintain to hold us up and stay with us according to Strongs definition. We go about our little worldly business without realizing, Jesus is near to help us. But unless our own devices are exhausted, we finally turn to Him.

I am reminded of something someone said. “I don’t want to bother God with every little problem.” Instead, we like to be in control and try to fix everything with our futile and faulty solutions. If we only turn to Him, He is the answer for everything. He is near. He is the Father’s right Hand, strong and mighty to help.

In short, Jesus is the mighty right hand of the Father. He is all we need.

Let us pray,

Father God, thank You for sending Jesus to me. I need Jesus every minute of every day. I need His presence. I need His help not only in pressing needs but at all times to infuse my thoughts, my words and my actions continually. Without Jesus, I depend on the shortcomings of my mind, the weakness of my abilities and the failings of my wisdom. I thank You Father that He is Your strong Right Hand and able to do mightily. I thank You Jesus is my Savior and that He is always with me. Thank You for Your precious gift of grace and mercy in Jesus. And thank You Lord for all Your blessings in Jesus. Be exalted my Lord. Be glorified in all things forever and ever. In the Name of Jesus I pray, amen.
