Jesus is Life and Light

“For with Thee is the fountain of life: in Thy light shall we see light.” (Psalms 36:9)

It’s stressed over and over in the Bible that Jesus is life and the source of life. Without Him there is no life for man. David writes in this psalm “with Thee.” And it is only with Him that there is life. There is an abundant life and eternal life with Jesus.

What is the full and abundant life that Jesus brings to us? This has many aspects to those who have received Him as their Lord and Savior. It is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. It’s God’s ever presence. It’s God’s ever help in every situation. It’s God supernatural, not of this world possibilities where and when things are impossible here on earth. It’s God’s peace and strength when we have neither. And it’s God’s joy. Jesus said, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

To understand this, we must know that before Jesus, our spirits were dead. There are horror movies of the living dead, but those without Jesus are truly the living dead. They are imprisoned in the kingdom of sin and death. There is nothing they can do to escape sin and death, no money, no effort. But God... God sent Jesus to take the wrath of God and death for that sin so that we could be free and live life eternally with Him. (John 3:16, Matthew 20:28) Only those who have received Jesus as Lord and Savior know the burden of spiritual death lifted off them. It is truly a rebirth.

Jesus spoke to Nicodemus about being born again. He didn’t understand because he was thinking in earthly terms, but Jesus was talking about his spirit. (John 3:1-15) Without Jesus the spirit is dead and living in the kingdom of sin and death, the kingdom of darkness and in the clutches of the devil. But when we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we change our allegiance. God immediately grasps us out of that kingdom and places us in His kingdom. Paul proclaims, “Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son: In whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins:” (Colossians 1:12-14)

But there are even more Good News. There is an abundant life here on earth. There are movies and cartoons about supernatural heroes who help mere humans supernaturally in this world. Those who have received Jesus as Lord and Savior have a superhero living in us. He is the Holy Spirit Whom Jesus sent to always be with us to help us. “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of Me:” (John 15:26) He lives in us to lead us and to teach us. “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:26) And later in his epistle, John writes, “But the anointing which ye have received of Him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him.” (1John 2:27) And He lives in us and is with us always. Ezekiel prophesied, “And I will put My Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep My judgments, and do them.” (Ezekiel 36:27) Paul writes to the Corinthians reminding them that they have received the Holy Spirit and that He lives in them. “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” (1Corinthians 6:19) We have a superhero in us to help us live out the life of Christ here on this earth.

Lastly, David writes, “...in Thy light shall we see light.” Jesus said, “...I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12) His kingdom is a kingdom of light. It conquers darkness. It dispels it. Anything the devil has to trap us, to kill us or destroy us is not greater than the light of Jesus which dispels the darkness of the devil. Those who have received Jesus as Lord and Savior, have this light. It’s invisible to us, but shines bright in the spiritual realm. There are few occasions when it was seen on earth. Moses shone with brightness after being in God’s presence on Mount Sinai. (Exodus 34:26-33) Jesus shone brightly when he was transfigured to speak to Moses and Elijah. “And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and His face did shine as the sun, and His raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.” (Matthew 17:1-3) The devil is afraid of this light. We have God in us. We can bring God’s kingdom to this dark world, shining the light of God wherever we go. And in His light, we see light, the Truth, the work of Jesus on this earth and the work of God in the lives of man.
