Jesus, Shepherd and Messiah

“And He shall stand and feed in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD His God; and they shall abide: for now shall He be great unto the ends of the earth.” (Micah 5:4)

Micah prophesies about Jesus, born in Bethlehem, Who will rule Israel and Who has been since everlasting. (Micah 5:2) He it is Who is appointed and established to be the Shepherd in the mighty power of the Self Existent and eternal LORD God. The great works of Jesus, He did in the power and in the name of the LORD God. Jesus said, “For as the Father hath life in Himself; so hath He given to the Son to have life in Himself; And hath given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of man.” (John 5:26-27) The works that Jesus did proved that He came from the Father and had authority from the Father. “But if I do, though ye believe not Me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” (John 10:38)

The word “feed” is a verb in the sentence of our Scripture of study and means that as a Shepherd He will guide, watch, preserve, restore, tend, as well as feed. Isaiah also made reference to the Messiah as a shepherd. “He shall feed His flock like a shepherd: He shall gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.” (Isaiah 40:11) Jesus gives to His sheep all that they need (Psalms 23:1), all that is needed for life in this world and in the world to come.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:” (Ephesians 1:3) All His blessings are already established in heaven. We can pray “Thy kingdom come, Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” As Jesus our Shepherd has given and has settled and established in heaven, let it be done here on earth. It’s hard for us to understand some heavenly things. God sees the end from the beginning. “Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:” (Isaiah 46:9-10) He sees us seated in heavenly places with Jesus as a done deal. We’re still struggling here on earth, but God sees us already victorious and glorified with Jesus.

We know we have the victory. We have assented to it mentally. But to believe it and act on that by faith, we can pray God’s Will to be done here on earth as it is already established in heaven. We can pray that over our loved ones who are still in the clutches of the devil. “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” We can pray that over a situation, a problem or a crisis. “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” His sheep will “abide.” They will sit in heavenly places and be established and live in the house of the Lord. In God’s eyes, we’re already there.

Micah declared, “...now shall He be great unto the ends of the earth” because he was looking forward to the coming Messiah. But now Jesus has come and He is great. Luke recorded what the angel told Mary when he appeared to her to tell her she would bear a child and who that child would be. “He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David:” (Luke 1:32) God’s promise to David is fulfilled when Jesus returns, sets feet on the Mount of Olives and conquers all His enemies. (Zechariah 14:4) And as declared in Revelation He will reign forever. “And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever.” (Revelation 11:15)
