“Then Thou spakest in vision to Thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.”
(Psalms 89:19)
Psalms 89 was written by Ethan the Ezrahite who was a singer in King David’s court. He begins the psalm like this: “Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite…” A maschil is a contemplation. Ethan was known as a wise man (1 Kings 4:31). He begins the psalms praising God, then praising King David. And that is who he is talking about in verse 19.
It was revealed to Ethan what God was doing through a vision. His vision is prophetic, saying that help would come through a mighty warrior, which David was. He chose David from the people. It is always God’s prerogative to anoint and to choose whoever He wants. And Ethan continues throughout the rest of the psalm to talk about David.
He says one thing that refers to David’s kingdom. “His seed also will I make to endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven.” (Psalms 89:29) This is a reference to a divine and everlasting kingdom. It is divine because it will be eternal. This refers to the Messiah. Although Ethan saw the vision as the seed of David, we know that Jesus, the Messiah was not conceived by the seed of a man. But, His mother Mary and His stepfather, Joseph belonged to the family of David. In tracing their lineage, they came from David. So when Jesus was born, He was a descendent of David.
God made a promise to David. “And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established forever.” (2Samuel 7:16) Jesus will reign forever. His reign will be eternal. And His reign will be divine. God chose David’s reign to continue eternally through the Messiah Who would be his descendent. David had a relationship with God. He trusted God in all things and depended on Him. Since his childhood when he cared for his father’s sheep, he praised and worshipped God. He knew God was faithful. His faith was established early in those days when he killed a lion and a bear that came after the sheep. (1 Samuel 17:34-37) And it was that faith that rose up when Goliath the giant slandered his God. “Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.” (1Samuel 17:45)
From the Scripture of our study we learn that God lets His people know what is going to happen. This is revelation from God that came to an anointed person through a vision. Another way revelation came would be through dreams. Another thing is that these revelations came years, decades and sometimes in later generations before they actually happened. It rarely happens like that today. This is not to say that it cannot happen because God can work however He wants.
Today, we have the Holy Spirit Who reveals what God is doing. He reveals God’s Will and Purposes through His Word, the Bible, in prayer, in worship and may even give us revelation through a vision or a dream. Jesus told His disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit. “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come.” (John 16:13) The Holy Spirit came at Pentecost.
If you get a revelation about something great that will happen in your life, prepare for it spiritually. Because the revelation came by spiritual means, it is established in God’s realm, the spirit realm. There will be resistance from this world and evil forces to keep you from receiving the promise. You cannot make it happen. This is a work of God. And unless God tells you when, it may be years, decades or generations later. But regardless, you can prepare yourself by prayer, by drawing near to God and by keeping your heart from sin and evil. And at God’s appointed time, He will bring it forth.
