Come

“And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” (Revelation 22:17)

This is the last revelation that John wrote before he ends the book of Revelation.  The Holy Spirit and the bride say, “Come.”  The Holy Spirit and the church say there is still time before Jesus comes to be saved, to be forgiven of your sins and to have eternal life. Those whose ears have been opened and understand have come to the Lord and they also say, “Come.”

This invitation is given to those who are athirst and to whosoever will to take of the water of life. This is the same water Jesus offered the Samaritan woman. “Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” (John 4:13-14) They may ask, “What is this water?”  It’s the Holy Spirit.  Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit to be in us. “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)

Jesus gives the water of life which is the Holy Spirit. “Jesus said, ‘And whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die. Believest thou this?” (John 11:26) This life is a gift of God given only through Jesus. (Romans 6:23) And immediately after believing and trusting in Jesus, this life is sealed or authenticated by the Holy Spirit coming to indwell. “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory.” (Ephesians 1:13-14) Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit which was to be given to man. The Holy Spirit did not come until Jesus left for heaven. “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you.” (John 16:7) The Holy Spirit indwelling makes it possible for the Father and Jesus to always be with us because the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one.

“In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink. He that believeth on Me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)” (John 7:37-39) The phrase that out of our belly shall flow rivers of living water is particularly unique.  The word belly means our inner most being where the Holy Spirit resides.  His work in us, the fruit and grace of God will flow out of us.  Jesus said that by our love they would know we are His disciples. (John 13:35) This is agape love which is unknown to the world. The grace and work of the Holy Spirit will flow out of us and reveal God’s life to the world.  They will know that we belong to Jesus. God’s living word in our lips and actions are foreign to the world.  It is life to them whose ears are opened with understanding and hear. It is God’s life and God’s light in us by the Holy Spirit flowing out for the world to hear and to see. And it’s the invitation of the Holy Spirit and the church to whosoever will hear and take of the water freely given saying, “Come.”
