Do as Thou has Said

“And now, O LORD God, the word that Thou hast spoken concerning Thy servant, and concerning his house, establish it for ever, and do as Thou hast said.” (2Samuel 7:25)

David wanted to build God a tabernacle, a dwelling place.  Nathan the prophet came to him with a word from God giving him a promise that Solomon would build a house for God and that his kingdom would be established forever. David prays a prayer of gratitude and prays, “do as Thou hast said.”

This was quite a promise.  In order for something to be forever it has to be eternal.  We know that the kingdoms of this world are not forever. They have never been and never will be. Kingdoms rise up and fall and another takes its place. But God was making David a promise. David received it and believed it.  Forever means eternal.  Only the divine is eternal. Hindsight is always accurate of course.  And in hindsight we see what God meant.  Jesus, the Son of God, the second person of the Holy Trinity, is God, divine and eternal.  He is of the house of David, a descendant of David, Solomon and etc... His kingdom is and will be forever fulfilling God’s promise to David. “And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever.” (Revelation 11:15)

David’s prayer was “do as Thou hast said.” God’s Word is eternal.  His promises are eternal.  They have power to accomplish what God said.  “So shall My word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11) It is His Will. These promises are ready to become real in our lives.  But like David, we must believe them.  We must receive them for ourselves.  And we must allow the Father to bring them to us, by saying “do as Thou has said.”

We don’t have to beg God for these promises.  They are ours. God wants us to have these promises, or He wouldn’t have made them. The first and greatest hurdle in receiving is believing. I don’t think that it’s so much doubt in God, but doubt that the promises are for us. We remember our weaknesses, our faults, our defects and our failures.  And we think we don’t deserve God’s promises.  And we don’t.  That is the great love and mercy of God.  We don’t deserve anything.  But He offers us of His Goodness and Love. I don’t think it would offend God to admit that we don’t deserve anything from Him, but because of the blood of Jesus, He has made us precious to Him. He paid a great price for us and made us precious. “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:(1Peter 1:18-19). Even though we were worthless and are worthless on our own.  In Jesus we are precious.  He has made us God’s child, (John 1:12) kings and royal priests. “And from Jesus Christ, Who is the faithful witness, and the First Begotten of the dead, and the Prince of the kings of the earth. Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father; to Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” (Revelation 1:5-6)

Another hurdle is the fact that we don’t know His promises.  We are lazy and undisciplined.  We don’t read the Word as we should.  And when we do read it, we read just words and gloss over golden nuggets that are hid in the Word of God, the Bible.  It’s good to have a time to just read the Bible. But study and meditation are a must to gleam those golden nuggets. And when we find them, like David, we must pray, “Do as Thou has said.”
