Fellowship with the Holy Spirit

“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” (Jeremiah 33:3)

Jeremiah was imprisoned by Zedekiah, the king of Judah, for prophesying that Babylon would overtake Judah. (Jeremiah 32:2,3) And God spoke to him while he was imprisoned. In those days only the prophets heard from God. They didn’t have the Holy Spirit indwelling, but the Spirit of God would come to them. For this reason, Jeremiah was imprisoned but held in the court of the prison where the elders and court officers could consult with him.

With the resurrection and ascension of Jesus, the Father sent the Holy Spirit to earth to indwell believers. Jesus said, “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come.” (John 16:13) This echoes what the Spirit said to Jeremiah.  And just like the Spirit of God only came to the prophets in those days, the Holy Spirit is only known and experienced by those who have made Jesus their Lord and Savior. He is with us and in us. “And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” (John 14:16-17) Jesus said that He teaches us all things. (John 14:26) Paul prayed for the Ephesians that they would receive the Spirit of wisdom Who is the one Who teaches us all things about Jesus. (Ephesians 1:17) “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;” (1Corinthians 12:7-8). Wisdom and the word of wisdom and knowledge only come from the Holy Spirit.

Most churches avoid teaching about the Holy Spirit. There is a fear that it will lead to people practicing spiritualism, the occult or that they might fall into a spirit of error. But the Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity. And the Father sent Him to be with us, to be in us and to seal us as His. It’s a tiny bit of how we will operate in heaven. It’s the proof and the guarantee that we are the children of God who will receive the promises He made to us and that we will receive the inheritance as children of God. “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory.” (Ephesians 1:13-14)

The Holy Spirit is not to be set aside, but to be a big part of our daily lives. We are to have communion with the Holy Spirit. “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. The second epistle to the Corinthians was written from Philippi, a city of Macedonia, by Titus and Lucas.” (2Corinthians 13:14) The word communion in this verse means fellowship. He is our constant companion. You may think you are alone, but the Holy Spirit is with you. He is our constant friend, helper, advisor, teacher, leader and God. He is in constant fellowship with the Father and Jesus. And He tells us what the Father and Jesus want us to know. He is God’s presence with us and in us. When we acknowledge Him and allow Him to lead us, even in the little daily things, you will be communicating with the Holy Spirit.
