“Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.” (Jeremiah 2:2)
Jeremiah prophesies saying, “Thus saith the Lord.” He speaks the words that the Lord wants to say to His people; “...I remember thee...” Knowing what we know about God’s world, how all things, past, present and future are known at once, we can get a better picture of how the Lord thinks of us. Solomon wrote a Scripture about this. It’s one of those Scriptures that puzzle man and may be taken simply as a divine Truth we will understand better in eternity. “That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.” (Ecclesiastes 3:15)
The Lord remembers us. He not only recounts the memory of us, but is mindful of us. He pays attention to what happens to us, to our coming and going. The psalmist wrote: “The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.” (Psalms 121:8) The word interpreted “preserve” in the original Hebrew means put a hedge around and guard. He is mindful of us, our past, present and future.
Jesus is the wisdom of God. “But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.” (1Corinthians 1:23-24) And Wisdom called out to man before He was incarnate. And He calls out to man even now. He delighted in man before He was incarnate anticipating the time He would dwell with us and be with us for eternity. Solomon in the wisdom that God gave him understood the eternity of the Messiah that hadn’t come yet, but was promised. He wrote how Jesus calls out to man and delights in the time to come with man. “Rejoicing in the habitable part of His earth; and My delights were with the sons of men.” (Proverbs 8:31) It is beyond awesome to think that even before Jesus was incarnate He delighted in being with us in His foreknowledge. Knowing this, how can we limit our time with Him to a few minutes in the morning and at night? He delights being with us.
David wrote, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from Thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!” (Psalms 139:14-17) How can we have any doubt that God is for us and not against us? (Romans 8:31) He watched and guarded our conception and development, all of our coming and goings (Psalms 121:8) and delights in it, anticipating our eternity with Him. We are ever in His remembrance. In His love for us He has engraved our names on His hand. “Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands...” (Isaiah 49:16a)
His love is ultimately His saving grace for us. He rescues us and personally takes us from the grasp of the devil and places us in His Goodness. (Colossians 1:13) He sends the Holy Spirit to indwell in us so that He is always with us. “And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever;” (John 14:16) And just as He anticipates being with us for eternity, we should be anticipating the time when we will live with Him in eternity.
