Jesus, Our Breaker

“The breaker is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate, and are gone out by it: and their king shall pass before them, and the LORD on the head of them.” (Micah 2:13)

Surely this is talking about our Lord. I had never heard the term “breaker” before but evidently, it’s the one who opens the way; the first one to go through. And Who is our breaker, but the Lord, Jesus on high? From His miraculous birth, He is the first born of the miraculous and born of God in this world. “And again, when He bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, He saith, And let all the angels of God worship Him.” (Hebrews 1:6) He is the firstborn of God in this world. When we are born of God by receiving Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we begin our lives as children of God. “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name:” (John 1:12) And we follow Jesus in this life of victory.

Jesus leads the way for us. He goes before us, not only showing us the way, but leading us as the head. “For it became Him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For both He that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause He is not ashamed to call them brethren, Saying, I will declare Thy name unto My brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto Thee. And again, I will put My trust in Him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;” (Hebrews 2:10-14)

Jesus took our punishment. He took our suffering. He took our struggles and gave us victory over every obstruction to life in Him. “For the LORD your God is He that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.” (Deuteronomy 20:4) God is the same, yesterday, today and forever. He changes not. He fights the battles for His people. He has done it before, and He will do it again. We can rest in that. “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1John 5:4-5) Every dart of the devil is deflected. The Lord has given us all that we need.

Now we need to rest in the victory. We don’t fight to win the battle. Jesus has gone before us and already conquered the enemy. How do we do that? We rest in the Truth. It is our faith, our belief in spite of what we feel, see or hear. As John explained in 1 John, it’s our faith in our faithful Lord. It’s our faith in our “breaker,” Who went before us. He is greater than the world, greater than the enemy, and even greater than our flesh. “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.” (1John 4:4)

And the last enemy that Jesus conquered was death. Yes, we fight to stay alive. God wants us here on earth until our appointed time. He has a purpose for each and every one of His children. But the time to leave this earth is inevitable. It’s coming for everyone. But as children of God and as believers in Jesus, we follow Jesus into eternity. “So, when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1Corinthians 15:54-57) Jesus took our sin and threw it into the deepest sea. (Micah 7:19) Jesus has conquered death. And as He put on immortality, we will also put on immortality.
