“But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.” (Galatians 5:18)
When we believe on Jesus and accept God’s merciful gift of salvation, immediately, we are given the promise of God the Holy Spirit Who indwells us. “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.” (Galatians 4:6) Many things we do not fully understand we believe without a doubt because the Holy Spirit in us testifies to us about it. And unless we study the Scriptures, we are not able to completely explain it. But we believe and live our lives in accordance to God’s way because we are now different people. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2Corinthians 5:17) And marvelous things have happened in the spiritual. We were “translated” which is the word that the Bible uses, moved and removed from the kingdom of sin and darkness to God’s kingdom of light, peace, love and life. Our old sinful nature was put to death on the cross. This is one of those things we accept as Truth because we don’t fully understand God’s world. But when Jesus died on the cross, our old sinful man was there nailed also in God’s world because He sees the end from the beginning. (Isaiah 46:10) And that old sinful person died and was reborn of God a new person. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Now because of the Holy Spirit residing in us we can be led of the Spirit. “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come. He shall glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are Mine: therefore said I, that He shall take of Mine, and shall shew it unto you.” (John 16:13-15) To understand this Scripture we have to remember that the Godhead which is the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one. Jesus said it many times and even prayed that we would be one. “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word; That they all may be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me. And the glory which Thou gavest Me I have given them; that they may be one, even as We are one: I in them, and Thou in Me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that Thou hast sent Me, and hast loved them, as Thou hast loved Me.” (John 17:20-23) Because the Godhead is one, they all agree. There is no disagreement in the Godhead. The Holy Spirit in us is in full agreement with the Father and Jesus. They speak and the Holy Spirit speaks in us. When Jesus walked on this earth, He said many times that He spoke only what the Father spoke and did only what the Father wanted. “For I have not spoken of Myself; but the Father which sent Me, He gave Me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that His commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto Me, so I speak.” (John 12:49-50)
Our spiritual ears should be attentive to the Holy Spirit. He is speaking to us the Father’s and Jesus’ words to us. He is speaking wisdom, knowledge and understanding which is foreign to this world system, ways and laws. He, the Holy Spirit is leading us on a higher plane unknown to this world. He is leading us in the way of righteousness, in the way that only God knows. (Psalms 23:3) When we have exhausted all our simple earthly ways, following the laws of this world of doing something that doesn’t work, the Holy Spirit has been speaking God’s way. And according to this world and the way it works it may seem foolish, but the Lord God Almighty is wiser and greater. His way is better. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9) And in the New Testament, the Scripture reads, “...the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” (1Corinthians 1:25)
