Maranatha

“And blessed be His glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with His glory; Amen, and Amen.” (Psalms 72:19)

Traditionally, this psalm is seen as written by Solomon, but it’s believed to have been written by David as Solomon was crowned king before David's death. The heading is confusing, “A Psalm for Solomon,” which may also be interpreted to Solomon or of Solomon. Commentators believe it was written by David as a prayer for Solomon.

David’s prayers were answered in Solomon. His great desire to build God a temple would be built by Solomon. This psalm is his prayer for Solomon who is now king. David had the prophetic gift of seeing with spiritual eyes the greatness of God. Verse 19 hints of the reign of Christ, “let the whole earth be filled with His glory.”

Do we have the spiritual eyes to see this fulfilled? The whole earth is today not filled with His glory. Over and over in the Bible, the whole earth is seen as wicked. “And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.” (1John 5:19) It is so wicked that it will be destroyed. “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” (2Peter 3:10) God said it and it will happen.

But there will be a new heaven and a new earth. Isaiah prophesied about it. “For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.” (Isaiah 65:17) And John wrote about it in Revelation. “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.” (Revelation 21:1) This new earth will not have a sea.

David prophesied about it in Psalms 22. “All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before Thee. For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and He is the governor among the nations. All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before Him: and none can keep alive his own soul. A Seed shall serve Him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. They shall come, and shall declare His righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that He hath done this.” (Psalms 22:27-31) God’s Word will come to pass as surely as all His prophecy has been fulfilled. “And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And He shall judge among the nations and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.” (Isaiah 2:2-5) This is the day of the Messiah the Jews are looking for. This also should be the day that we look forward to. This is the day when Christ will reign over the whole earth.

Our prayer should be, “Thy kingdom come, Thy Will be done.” And it should be “Maranatha.” That word in Greek means “Come Lord.” Are we looking forward to the Lord’s return? Are we looking forward to His reign? This is when the whole earth will be filled with His glory and the whole earth will worship Him.
