Our Own God

“Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall bless us.” (Psalms 67:6)

The psalm begins with the word then. The word then refers to the previous verse.  “Let the people praise Thee, O God; let all the people praise Thee.” (Psalms 67:5) When all the people praise God, then the earth will blossom and with bear her fruit. As for now, earth is under the dominion of the devil.  The forests are dwindling. There are disasters upon the earth, from floods to fires. There are droughts and food shortages. Man is trying to manipulate the natural state of the earth because of these events which cause dearth, but only succeed in more destruction.  But there will come a time on this earth when the whole world will praise the Lord. “All nations whom Thou hast made shall come and worship before Thee, O Lord; and shall glorify Thy name.” (Psalms 86:9)

The Lord will reign on earth.  There will only be blessing upon the earth. The devil will be bound and unable to roam the earth with his cursing. “And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,” (Revelation 20:1-2). And the whole earth will desire and seek after God. “Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities: And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also.” (Zechariah 8:20-21)

But today, will the people know Him?  Will they praise His works if they have not heard of Him? “How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14) The word preacher in that verse doesn’t mean a minister or reverend, but someone who proclaims. I would add another question to Romans 10:14. How will they know the goodness of God if His children do not proclaim it? He has done great and mighty things in our lives. Shout it from the roof tops. Shout it in the streets. Tell of His goodness to all and any who will listen. Praise Him so that all may hear, and all will know how much He loves them and how much He wants to be in their lives.

And with the phrase, “and God, even our own God” we hold possession of God. He is no longer only the God of Abraham, Iaasic and Jacob, He is our God.  He is my God. “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for Me?” (Jeremiah 32:27) When we give our life to the Lord, we are His and He is ours. “O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker. For He is our God; and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. Today if ye will hear His voice, Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:” (Psalms 95:6-8) Our lives belong to Him.  We have been bought with a high and precious price. “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” (1Corinthians 6:20) And He dwells in us through the Holy Spirit. And we dwell in Him. “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in Me.” (John 15:4)

I don’t think we really understand all the intricacies of what these verses mean because we live our lives as people of this world.  There is no excuse.  We have just allowed ourselves to live in the flesh instead of the spirit. Even if we pray, read our Bibles, go to church each time the doors open and study the Word, we struggle with the world. We want what the world offers.  We want what our flesh demands. God forgive us. I pray that we may truly desire the spiritual, our God and worship Him for Who He is.
