The Lord Strong and Mighty

“Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.” (Psalms 24:8)

This psalm is thought to have been sung as David brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. (2 Samuel 6:12-19) Most likely it was sung in two parts, the question and the answer. The question is asked by a lead singer “Who is this King of glory?” The answer is then sung by the chorus.

It’s without a doubt that the LORD is strong and mighty. Jeremiah declared His great and mighty power in creation. “Ah Lord GOD! behold, Thou hast made the heaven and the earth by Thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for Thee:” (Jeremiah 32:17) And Moses extolled the Lord in his final blessing to the children of Israel. “There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, Who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in His excellency on the sky.” (Deuteronomy 33:26) David exalted the Lord before the assembly of the people confirming Solomon as king and as the one who would build the temple of God. “Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is Thine; Thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and Thou art exalted as head above all.” (1Chronicles 29:11)

David knew the might of God in battle. In his days as shepherd, he saw the hand of God help him fight the bear and the lion. (1Samuel 17:34-36) He proved God’s might in slaying Goliath, with his battle cry. “Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, and He will give you into our hands.” (1Samuel 17:45-47)

But none know God’s strength and might more than those who have been redeemed by the Lord. He has rescued and snatched us out of the dragon’s fangs and a destiny of destruction. The Lord Jesus is the One Who in His obedience to death, blew the gates of hell wide open and brought us out of bondage to new life, to the light and Truth, to purity and rightness before God. “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son:” (Colossians 1:13)

And we have His promises for eternity validated and authorized by the Holy Spirit living in us and guaranteeing His Presence forever with us. “For all the promises of God in Him are yea, and in Him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. Now He which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.” (2Corinthians 1:20-22)

In the battles, struggles and difficulties of daily life, He is there to comfort, to heal and deliver, always and anywhere. “Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of His knowledge by us in every place.” (2Corinthians 2:14) It’s our faith in His Word and His promises which is challenged every day. But the Word of God in our lips triumphs in victory as we persevere. “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” (1John 5:4) Paul went through some of the hardest testings of his faith. When Paul knew his end was coming, he wrote to Timothy and said, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:” (2Timothy 4:7)

And even in death there is victory for the child of God. “Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1Corinthians 15:51-57) Our God is the Lord strong and mighty Who conquered death, the worst infliction of the enemy toward man. We can sing along with David. “Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.” (Psalms 24:8)
