“You love righteousness, and hate wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your fellows.” (Psalms 45:7)
The sons of Korah wrote this psalm which was given to the chief musician who was probably Asaph during the time of David’s reign. There was lots of worship during this time and the atmosphere was filled with the presence and glory of God among the worshippers which David had worshipping day and night. The anointing was on them to worship. There was also an anointing on certain ones, Asaph and Jeduthun for example who led the musicians and worshippers. There are also the sons of Korah and others who also wrote psalms and prophesied. Not only were they anointed, but the anointing was passed on their sons. “And the singers, the sons of Asaph were in their place, according to the command of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and Jeduthun, the king's seer. And the gatekeepers were at every gate. It was not for them to depart from their service; for their brothers the Levites prepared for them.” (2Chronicles 35:15) Jeduthun who prophesied was called the king’s seer, meaning that he prophesied over the king.
This psalm is to God, God the Son, the Messiah and Savior of the world. It speaks to Jesus, calling Him God and yet referring to another God, “...therefore God, Your God...” So prophetically, they addressed the Messiah, God the Son about the work of God the Father. A side note here: This is the argument that Muslims have against Christians, that we worship many gods. But we do not. We worship the One True God which is recognized as the Godhead in which there are three separate individuals, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, God refers to Himself as this Godhead. His Name, Elohim is a plural word. “And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over all the creepers creeping on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26) Some may say that He spoke in the plural because He was talking to angels, but angels although divine are created creatures and servants of the Most High God without authority to decide eternal things They are not equal to God nor made in His image. Elohim, plural, makes the decision to expulse man from the garden. “And Jehovah God said, Behold, the man has become as one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever, therefore Jehovah God sent him out from the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he had been taken.” (Genesis 3:22-23) Elohim says “...he has become as one of Us...” The angels are not part of God or “Us.” This is an argument and discussion that went on in the study of Scripture in the first and second century among famed theologians as Irenaeus, Tertullian and is concluded in the “Constitution of the Holy Apostles,” Book V., VII. And although we may not understand the concept of the Holy Trinity, we accept it and believe it because Scripture supports it. It’s one of those heavenly concepts our human, earthly minds can’t understand.
This Scripture states the reason God the Father is well pleased with God the Son. In His human body, He loved righteousness, and hated wickedness. We must remember that Jesus was totally man and yet totally God. As a man, He was tempted in every way a man is tempted. “... the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life...” (1John 2:15, 16) and did not sin. You may get the impression this was no small thing for Him. But think about a temptation you have had and how difficult it was or is to resist. Jesus felt that too. But the Word of God, the Holy Spirit and His love of righteousness and hatred for wickedness kept Him from sinning. God the Father has exalted Him far above every man and seated Him at His right hand with all His authority. Paul prayed that we would understand this great power which Christ, Who sits at the right hand of the Father, works for us and in us. “Therefore I also, hearing of your faith in the Lord Jesus and love to all the saints, do not cease giving thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of His calling, and what is the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us, the ones believing according to the working of His mighty strength which He worked in Christ in raising Him from the dead, and He seated Him at His right hand in the heavenlies, far above all principality and authority and power and dominion, and every name being named, not only in this world, but also in the coming age.” (Ephesians 1:15-21)
Jesus was able to resist sin. Because we have the Word of God and the Holy Spirit indwelling, we should have this love for righteousness and hatred for wickedness that Jesus had and resist sin. This can only be done by walking and living every minute in the spirit. We are commanded, “Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, because all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passes away, and the lust of it, but he who does the will of God abides forever.” (1John 2:15-17) Paul in his letter to the Galatians writes how to do this. “I say, then, Walk in the Spirit and you shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16) The word walk means to be occupied with the Spirit.
It's not an easy thing because we get involved with the things of this world and forget that the Holy Spirit is walking with us every minute and speaking to us about everything at every moment. But we are not listening most times. This is something we must develop. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul closes with a statement that exhorts us to have communion or fellowship with the Holy Spirit. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.” (2Corinthians 13:14) In other words, he is saying, let it be with you from now on is the inference.
To sum up, this one Scripture states how Jesus resisted temptation which has implications of how we can resist temptation. This is why Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father will all authority. “... raising Him from the dead, and He seated Him at His right hand in the heavenlies, far above all principality and authority and power and dominion, and every name being named, not only in this world, but also in the coming age.” (Ephesians 1:20-21) It also clearly supports the concept of the Holy Trinity in stating what God (the Father) says to the Jesus (God the Son).
