The Redeemer and Judge

“For I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:” (Job 19:25)

For all that Job suffered, he still recognizes the Lord as Lord. He calls Him “my Redeemer,” meaning my Deliverer, my Avenger, the One Who will pay my ransom. He knew that the Lord was alive. His Redeemer was not like any other god who could not act, could not judge rightly and help.

Job trusted in His Redeemer, no matter what happened. “And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:” (Job 19:26) He had revelation of the resurrection of his body. “Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.” (Job 19:27)

Jesus is the Redeemer. He is the One Who has paid the ransom with His death and shedding of His blood. He is alive and sits at the right hand of the Father, in a place of honor, authority and power. He judges rightly and carries out the duty of the High Priest in heaven, before the Throne of mercy and grace. He intercedes for us, the sacrifice of His body and poured out blood, the sacrifice that satisfies the payment for our sin, our weaknesses, our rebellion, our betrayal, our slothfulness and disobedience. “Let us, then, hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we have a great High Priest who has gone into the very presence of God—Jesus, the Son of God. Our High Priest is not one who cannot feel sympathy for our weaknesses. On the contrary, we have a High Priest who was tempted in every way that we are but did not sin. Let us have confidence, then, and approach God's throne, where there is grace. There we will receive mercy and find grace to help us just when we need it.” (Hebrews 4:14-16)

Job has revelation of the Lord returning to earth and setting His feet on earth in the “latter day,” meaning the end time days. Zechariah prophesied about it. “For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when He fought in the day of battle. And His feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. (Zechariah 14:2-4) Many other Old Testament prophets prophesied about the return of the Messiah at the end of time; Ezekiel, Isaiah, Nahum, Micah and Joel.

Many may question, why Jesus would be the One to judge. This even Job knew, even if he didn’t understand completely. Many Old Testament saints had revelation and believed without fully understanding what God was doing. “It was concerning this salvation that the prophets made careful search and investigation, and they prophesied about this gift which God would give you. They tried to find out when the time would be and how it would come. This was the time to which Christ's Spirit in them was pointing, in predicting the sufferings that Christ would have to endure and the glory that would follow. God revealed to these prophets that their work was not for their own benefit, but for yours, as they spoke about those things which you have now heard from the messengers who announced the Good News by the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. These are things which even the angels would like to understand.” (1Peter 1:10-12)

Jesus will be the Judge of the living and the dead. “For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent Him.” (John 5:22-23) For those who are in Him, we will be judged for our works. For those who are not in Jesus, to the lake of fire. “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that everyone may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.” (2Corinthians 5:10) But the unbeliever will be condemned. “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8)
