The Stones and the Dust

“Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come. For Thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof.” (Psalms 102:13-14)

This is talking prophetically of the church, the believers, probably in the time of the reign of Christ. It cannot speak of Jerusalem during the Babylonia captivity when Jerusalem was in ruins because it was written after the 70 years of Babylonian captivity. And it cannot be speaking of the new Jerusalem because that city will come down from heaven.  But this prophecy tells of a time of favor for Jerusalem. Jesus will reign here on earth, in Jerusalem for a thousand years. Isaiah prophesies about it. “And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in My wrath I smote thee, but in My favour have I had mercy on thee. Therefore, thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought. For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted. The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious. The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The city of the LORD, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.” (Isaiah 60:10-14) And all of Israel will be saved, believing in Jesus. “Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, that I may be glorified.” (Isaiah 60:21) God has a set time, a perfect time for all things. If He said it, it will come to pass, though it may be years, decades, or centuries. At His perfect and set time it will happen.

When Moses led the people to the Promised Land, he went through Moab. The king, Balak sent Balaam to curse them. But he couldn’t and instead blessed them.  Balaam spoke of just a fourth part of them as the dust meaning they were as numerous as the dust and unable to be counted. “Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!” (Numbers 23:10) Now in Psalms 102, the psalmist writes about the stones and the dust of Zion. It can literally mean the stones which will be used to rebuild Zion.  And the dust can literally be the land which yes, they will love, but because it’s prophecy we can also take it metaphorically. The stones can mean the lively stones Peter writes about. Peter wrote how the Lord has chosen living stones to build His priesthood, meaning believers in Jesus, who when they gather together form a temple of praise to Him. So in Psalms 102:14, it can mean that the believing Gentiles will love the lively stones of Jerusalem, the people of Jerusalem who are now part of the church.

The dust can mean the multitude of Jews which will be favored by the believing Gentiles who the psalmist calls the servants of the Lord. God has a plan for the salvation of Israel.  A true follower of Jesus loves the Jewish people and prays for their salvation. During the reign of Christ in Jerusalem, the Gentiles will love and favor the Jews. Just as every prophecy of Jesus was fulfilled, every prophecy of Jerusalem will be fulfilled.

We cannot blame the Jews for the crucifixion of Jesus. No one could have crucified Jesus if He had not wanted to go to that cross. “Therefore doth My Father love me, because I lay down My life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of My Father.” (John 10:17-18) Jesus was crucified because of all our sin. But Jesus gave His life willingly so that we could be free of the darkness that held us prisoners in sin.  Now we are free to live a righteous life filled with His very presence by the Holy Spirit Who indwells. And as believers we love the Jewish people because they brought us knowledge of the One True God, Yahweh. At this time, they may be very secular, but the time will come when they will know their Messiah, Lord and King.
