The Thirst for God

“For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour My spirit upon thy seed, and My blessing upon thine offspring: And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.” (Isaiah 44:3-4)

Thirst is metaphorically used as a spiritual need in the Bible. David wrote in psalms, “To the chief Musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah. As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after Thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?” (Psalms 42:1-2) Thirst is an essential need for the body. Without water we die. And without God, we die.

When Jesus spoke with the Samaritan woman, He spoke to her about this water that would quench the thirst man has for God. “Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” (John 4:13-14) Jesus was talking about the living water that gives life to our spirit and satisfies the soul (mind, will and emotions). It satisfies the need that is in every person for God. When people are in darkness, they don’t know that what they are searching for is God. They run here and there searching for something that will quench that thirst, but don’t find it in anything until they turn to God. Only turning to God can quench that thirst. We see in this that the Lord has not left man lost in the kingdom of darkness. He has given man a help, by placing a thirst that only He can satisfy and quench. And when they turn to Him, there is no more searching and no more thirst.

Not only does the Lord give us to drink of the living water, but abundantly gives life like a flood watering a dry cracked parched land. The seed of the Gospel that has been dormant in the dry soil sprouts and takes root. What seed do those in darkness have? The seed of the Gospel that has been planted over and over by the children of God, by their testimonies and by their love. God’s promise to water the seeds that we’ve planted is for us and for our children. In this verse God through Isaiah’s prophesy is not talking about your natural born children. He is talking about those who have come to the Lord through your testimony and love. Paul wrote, “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.” (1Corinthians 3:6)

The Lord’s analogy of this seed springing up in the grass indicates that they are healthy spiritually. Grass thrives in healthy soil. It grows green and grows quickly. These offspring that sprout, are full of God’s blessing. They are like green grass watered and healthy spiritually. They are like the willows that grow by the water courses, their roots sipping the water from the streams of water. What a beautiful picture of our spiritual offspring. It may seem like we’re planting and planting and see no harvest, but the harvest is coming. The Lord has promised.

Again, while the promise of this prophecy is for Israel, we do make that connection to the fulfillment in the New Testament. For the Jews, this prophecy is not yet fulfilled.  It will not be fulfilled until the thousand-year reign of Christ when Israel will be saved. It will be a time of peace, a time of all seeking the Lord, of Jesus glorified and the light of the Lord full force lighting the new earth. “And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also. Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD.” (Zechariah 8:21-22) There will be no sun, moon nor stars.  “And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.” (Revelation 21:23) And all the promises to Israel will be fulfilled. Nations will honor Israel. “And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in My wrath I smote thee, but in My favour have I had mercy on thee. Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought. For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.” (Isaiah 60:10-12) In our Scripture of study we see the prosperity of Israel. But it will be in the thousand-year reign of Christ. For those who have believed on Jesus and have made Him Lord, they are living in the eternal covenant of peace now. And His promise is fulfilled and being fulfilled.
