“And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.” (Exodus 16:21)
God provided manna for the Israelites in the desert for them to eat. It was not to be store or it’d spoil. They were to gather enough to eat that morning. Then it melted with the sun. This was God’s provision.
As humans, I don’t know what it is, but we feel we have to store everything for future need. It’s a need to ensure that we have overage at all times, be it food, money, clothes, whatever. We must have a reserve. But God doesn’t work that way. God wants His people to live by faith, to depend on Him for provision and for us to glorify Him as Jehovah Jirah, our Provider. This is true in all things. Just look at what happened when the Israelites tried to store manna for later. “And Moses said, Let no man leave of it till the morning. Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.” (Exodus 16:19-20)
We have similar Scriptures in the New Testament. “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:” (Matthew 6:19-20) The next verse reveals to us what is at the core of our hoarding. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:21) When we store up something, we’re treasuring it. We guard it. And in our hearts, it becomes a treasure. But God wants our hearts to belong to Him. Our treasure is in heaven.
This is the same in all things. How many of us have a daily Bible reading and read several daily readings so we don’t have to read the following day? I don’t know who does this, but it must be true because they don’t read their Bible daily. Either that or they are starving on yesterday’s spiritual provision. Now there are times when we skip our reading because of circumstances. But if your spirit is fed daily, when you skip, you feel it. Why is it important to read your Bible daily? It is God’s provision for that day. In it is what you need to grow in nearness to God, in wisdom and knowledge of God and in strength that you need for that day. Yesterday’s manna is no good for today. When we read our daily devotion, we might feel that it has nothing for us that day. But the Holy Spirit has something that will help us in our dire time that day. Each day brings its own hardship and challenges. And each day, God will provide that strength, maturing and wisdom needed for that day. “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” (Matthew 6:34) It’s God’s provision. So read your daily devotion or Scriptures. And like a cow chews its cud, ruminate on God’s wisdom. Allow the Holy Spirit to give you nuggets of wisdom. Allow it to transform you. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:2)
The same is true of anointings. Yesterday’s great move of God is not for today. Many evangelists and ministers are living on yesterday’s anointing. This is not God. We must have something fresh and new from the Lord daily. When preachers store up sermons, they are using yesterday’s provision. It’s Truth and it’s good, but not what is needed. What is needed is a Word from God for today. Our spirits cry out for a Word from the Throne of God for today. Preachers, that’s why we come. What is God saying today? What Word of wisdom or comfort does He have for us today? We want to hear from the Throne of God.
God’s Word, although thousands of years old, is good for today. When we reread a Scripture it’s as applicable to our situation today as it was for the situation before. It has a way of transcending time and circumstances. This is a God thing. Nothing is an accident or coincidence in God’s world. His Word that comes to you today is for today. “The young lions do lack and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.” (Psalms 34:10) There is no lack for those who seek God.
