LESSON 14

You May Know that You Know

"And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." (1John 5:11-13)

God wants you to be certain that you are saved and have eternal life. If you received Jesus as Lord and Savior, believe the work that Jesus did and believe the shedding of His blood for the forgiveness of sin, then you are in the Son and you have the Son of God. Let nothing and no one give you doubts.

Are you married or unmarried? You know for sure whether you are or not…You would not answer, "…well, maybe I am." You know for sure yes or no. So is our assurance of salvation. There are no half measures with God. We cannot be uncertain and take God on a more or less basis.

You may be wondering, then why do I keep sinning? Before accepting Christ, you sinned and did not feel bad. You liked to sin, do the things you did and say the things you said. But now you have the evidence that something changed. You don't like to sin and you don't want to sin. Don't be discouraged. I'll explain why. Man is a spirit. He has a soul which is his mind, will and emotions. And he lives in a body.  Before receiving Christ, your spirit was dead to the things of God. You couldn't receive from Him.  When you received Christ, your spirit was born a new spirit, born of God, eternal and holy in communication with God and receiving from Him. But the body was not born again.

The body is referred to as the flesh in the Bible. The flesh wants… wants what it likes, what it sees and what it hears and feels in the natural. The flesh gives your soul that information and your mind and will decide to pay attention to it, justifying you for one reason or another. As long as your reborn spirit is in communication with God, it does not want to sin. When we get closer to God and grow in the Lord, in his Word (the Bible), that transforms our soul and mind and you will begin to obey God's commandments more easily.

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." (Romans 12:1-2)

We call this the process. It is a growth process and we are all in a process because we are not perfect and we will not be until we see Jesus face to face. In this process, Christ is working in us on that path of perfection to be more like Him.

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:" (Philippians 1:6)

Meanwhile, we are fighting that battle with the flesh and also with the world, which is a system that is very contrary to the kingdom of God.

I want to explain to you that there is a difference between having a relationship and a communion with God and just knowing about Him. Now that you are a child of God you have a relationship with God.  He is the Heavenly Father and He is your Father. That doesn't change when you fail. All of us are children of our natural parents on earth and some of us are parents. Well, when you were young, were there times when you disobeyed or rebelled against your parents? Are you still their son or daughter? Of course!  But perhaps the fellowship between you and them was not the same. So it is with our Heavenly Father.  When we fail Him, we are still His child, but now there is no joy in our communion with Him because we have that sin that separates us from Him and also we feel guilty and doubts come to us.

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1John 1:9)

God is so good. He tells us what to do when we fail. He forgave our past, present, and future sins. But it is important to confess sins that we have committed even though they are already forgiven. This frees us from guilt, remembering that He forgives us, repenting of failing Him and asking for His help, helps us in winning the battle in our weakness.

"You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." (John 8:44)

Jesus was speaking to those that did not want to accept the Gospel. He tells them that they are from their father the devil. The enemy of God and all mankind is the "father of lies." He delights in tempting us and then bringing us doubts and feelings of guilt. All this is the consequence of sin. Don't trust those feelings, but go to the Truth of God's Word, the Bible.

Follow the instructions of 1 John 1:9 and confess your sin, renounce that weakness to sin and repent. That means that you decide not to do it anymore. The Holy Spirit will help you win that battle. He has power to help you. You have to have faith in God and His Word and not in feelings. We can trust in God's forgiveness and have that joy of salvation.

I hope you have a little more knowledge of the process that is going on. Rest assured that you ARE saved and that God will be able to work in you and change your life.
