LESSON 8

Jesus' Example

Why is it important to have a daily quiet time?

There are 3 important reasons

1. To help you achieve your worthiest purposes.

2. To follow the example of the Lord.

3. To gain spiritual strength.

Reason 1 is to help you achieve your worthiest purposes

Genesis 1:27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female he created them.

Man was created with the ability to enjoy spiritual communion.

None of God's creation has that honor.

The human being can enjoy this amazing privilege.

1 Corinthians 1:9 “Faithful is God, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”

It is a great calling to have fellowship with Christ.

The second reason for having your daily devotional is to follow the example of the Lord.

Jesus never let his many occupations prevent him from setting aside to pray because his time to pray was very important to him and it is even more so to us.

Luke 10:38-42

When Jesus went to visit Lazarus at his house, his sisters were there.

Marta was busy preparing the food and other preparations for the visit.

But Mary left her work and sat at Jesus' feet to listen to him.

When Martha complained, Jesus told her, "Mary chose the best."

Instead of staying in bed another 15 minutes, choose the best and spent time with Jesus.

Here are some quotes.

Matthew 14:23 After dismissing the crowd, he went up the mountain alone to pray; and in the evening, he was there alone.

Mark 6:46 After saying goodbye to them, she went to the mountain to pray.

Luke 6:12 In those days Jesus went to the mountain to pray, and spent the whole night in prayer to God.

Luke 9:28 And about eight days after these words, Jesus took Peter, John, and James (James) with Him, and went up the mountain to pray.

Luke 11: 1 It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples."

Mark 1:35 Getting up early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus went out and went to a lonely place, and there he prayed.

The busier he was, the more he sought to be alone with his Father.

And so it is with us.

The busier we are, the more we need to spend time with Him.

We need more of his peace and more of his direction.

Luke 5: 15-16 his fame spread more and more, and large crowds gathered to hear Jesus and be healed of his diseases. (16) But

He often retired to lonely places and prayed.

We can see that his priority was to spend time with his father.

Thus, he must be with us.

Martin Luther, the great reformer said:

“I have so much to do today that I need to start the day by spending at least 2 hours alone with God.”

Martin Luther knew that he needed more from God the more he had to do.

I want to say here that it is not about how many hours but the important thing is that you spend time with God alone and the Lord and you will know how much time you need together.

The third reason for having your quiet time is to gain spiritual strength.

Why do we eat breakfast, lunch and dinner daily?

It is to have physical strength to do the things we have to do.

So it is in the spiritual.

The Word of God is called the Bread of Life.

It is food for our spirit.

If we want to have strong spirits, we have to nourish him with the Word of God and his presence on a daily basis.

Don't be fooled into thinking that you can pursue a life in the Lord without spending time in God's Word and in His presence.

It would be like getting married and never living with his spouse.

Job 23:12 I have not departed from the commandment of his lips, I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my food.

Matthew 4:4 But Jesus replied, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD.'"

We must live by all the Word that comes out of the mouth of God.

His Word is the Bible. That is why studying the Bible is very important.

We must have a priority time in the Presence of God and in His Word

Remember that it is important to know how much sleep you need in order to plan ahead to be awake for your quiet time.

This morning devotional is the key to fulfilling God's plan for your life.
