LESSON 2

God's Gift

Before Jesus, no one could escape the death that sin brings. It is eternal death and torment. “...in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God and who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,” (2Thessalonians 1:8-9). Man was hopelessly unable to save himself from his sin nature and the consequences that it brought. But God's marvelous gift, Jesus and His work on the Cross, paid the price for our sin and death. He took death for us. So now we can live eternally. But His gift has to be received and accepted. He offers it to us free. We cannot earn it. We can’t do enough to get it. Nor are we able to purchase it. We don't deserve it. But God's Goodness and Love offers us this wonderful gift of life. “For by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9) It is Grace, God’s undeserved favor that offers it to us.

So how do we get this gift? We repent. That means we make a decision to leave our sin. And we surrender our life to Jesus. That means that we make Him our Lord. And like in olden times when the people obeyed the lord, we obey Him and let Him rule our lives.

Here is another Scripture that tells us about God's Love and eternal gift: "For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16) The following verse tells us Jesus’ purpose in coming. “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him.” (John 3:17) It’s God desire that everyone would be saved. This is the reason that in this age of grace He is being so patient with sinners. It’s not like in times before Jesus that sin was punished rapidly and severely. “The Lord is not slow concerning His promise, as some count slowness, but is long-suffering toward us, not purposing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (2Peter 3:9)

But there is a time coming soon when this age of grace will end. Then it will be too late. The time to come to Jesus and surrender your life to Him is NOW while there is still time. “(For He says, "In an acceptable time I heard you, and in a day of salvation, I helped you;" Behold, now is the accepted time. Behold, now is the day of salvation.)” (2Corinthians  6:2) Now is the time to repent.

As before read and think on what the Scriptures mean and how you can come in line with God’s Word to escape the perishing of the world.
