Lesson 5
Grace
How are we saved from the consequences of sin? Let’s clarify that there are earthly consequences which we may have to suffer. For example, if a young unmarried girl has sex, she may well get pregnant and have to deal with an unwanted pregnancy. Or if someone robs a bank, they may very well go to jail. These are extreme examples, but illustrate the matter. But spiritually, if we are saved, we will not suffer the consequences of spiritual death, which are eternal separation from God and eternal torment. So, there are earthly and spiritual consequences of not being saved. But when we render our lives to the Lord, He comes and dwells in us. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:17) When the Lord is with us, we benefit from His Goodness. Immediately and I say this from experience, His peace that passes all understanding will embrace your life and circumstances.
Many people do all sorts of things thinking they can influence God, or think that God will shower them with favor because of they have done. But this is totally in error. Scripture tells us clearly, that we can’t earn His favor. It is His gift to us. We could NEVER do enough, give enough or sacrifice enough to earn our salvation. We could never do, give or sacrifice more than Jesus did, gave or sacrificed. His work on the Cross, because of His sinless nature, was enough to pay the price for our redemption. And God the Father gives it to us freely when we believe on Him and accept the sacrifice of Jesus for our salvation.
This Scripture says by grace. That’s God’s unmerited (undeserved) favor. And by faith we are saved. Faith is believing without any doubt in Jesus, what He said and did and putting our trust in His FINISHED work of salvation. Before Jesus died on the Cross, He said, “It is finished.” He meant that what He came to do on earth was completed. He took our punishment. He took our death. And He redeemed (bought us back) us. Redemption is a whole other study, but quickly will tell you that we were lost when Adam and Eve turned it over to God’s enemy, satan. But now we are the Redeemed!
